Why Weight Gain During Period?
Ah, the dreaded period weight gain. Every month, like clockwork, I’d notice a couple of extra pounds on the scale just before my period started. It was frustrating, but eventually, I learned it was a normal part of the menstrual cycle.
Weight gain during your period is primarily due to hormonal changes. In the days leading up to menstruation, levels of progesterone increase. Progesterone can cause the body to retain water and salt, leading to bloating and temporary weight gain. This was always the case for me; my clothes felt tighter, and I felt heavier, even though my eating habits hadn’t changed significantly.
Another contributing factor is cravings. Many women, including myself, experience strong cravings for salty or sugary foods during their period. These comfort foods can contribute to bloating and weight gain. I remember craving chocolate and chips intensely, and indulging in these cravings certainly added to the extra pounds.
Additionally, during this time, some women may experience constipation due to hormonal changes, which can also contribute to the feeling of being bloated and heavier.
It took a while, but I eventually learned to manage period weight gain better. I started drinking more water to help reduce bloating and focused on eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Regular exercise also helped alleviate some of the symptoms.
Understanding that this weight gain is temporary and part of a natural process helped me be kinder to myself during that time of the month. It’s a reminder of the complex and fascinating ways our bodies function.
